On release it seemed that this new engine (the 4M40) would be both robust and have adequate performance to compete in the marketplace with the performance leader- the Rodeo.

The engine had already proved itself strong and reliable in Intercooled turbo configuration in the Pajero. But in naturally aspirated form it soon became evident that there was a need for an aftermarket turbo system for the vehicle.

In designing the system for the Triton, a number of very important factors/design criteria were taken into consideration. These were:

• Using as many standard components as possible - i.e. exhaust system, air cleaner and inlet manifold to be retained to aid aftermarket serviceability.

• A Mitsubishi watercooled TD04 turbocharger - a proven product - was to be used.

• A primary exhaust with inbuilt flex was to be used to reduce vibration and transmitted interior noise.

• A cast iron hi temperature exhaust manifold was to be used

All of the above were to be used to provide a conversion that would be a market leader in terms of performance and reliability.
